The IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is a series of alphanumeric characters that identifies a customer account maintained at a financial institution. Each account has an IBAN.
The IBAN consists of a maximum of 34 alphanumeric characters. The first two are alphabetic and identify the country, the next two are numeric digits and are controlling the entire IBAN, the remaining characters identify the financial institution and account office.
The IBAN in printed form is divided into groups of four characters separated by a space and preceded by the word "IBAN". In electronic form, the word "IBAN" is omitted and the characters appear without spaces.
In the case of Spain, the IBAN consists of 24 characters: the first two are alphabetic and identify the country (ES), the following two are numeric and are the check digits of all IBAN, the remaining 20 characters for the current Account Code Customer.
